Review Thursday: Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Review Thursday: I recently learned how important book reviews are and so I am going to try to post the reviews I have for books on both my blog, and other platforms Good Reads, Amazon etc. Reviews help authors!

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

I read this book in one day. To be fair, I spent most of that rainy day holding a sleeping baby, but still I couldn't put it down.

Adeyemi does a masterful job of world-building, and infusing the necessary history as part of the plot instead of exposition. It also has one of the strongest hooks in the beginning--I felt immediately immersed in Zelie's world, felt I was rooting for her and cared about her immediately.

One note for younger readers--there are some pretty intense themes in the book especially in regard to graphic violence and military brutality that readers should be aware of especially in a genre where fantasy violence is less realistic. However, I do think it was interesting and cool to have fantasy set in a non-western culture (instead of that all fantasy settings are medieval England).

I recommend wholeheartedly, and look forward to seeing more from Adeyemi.

Spoilers:

My main criticism of this novel is the cliff-hanger ending, but I guess it just makes me want to read the next one.
